Cell phone-free policy begins this summer

As part of our commitment to creating a focused and distraction-free learning environment, and in alignment with Gov. Kathy Hochul's directive that all New York schools must have smartphone-free environments, Albany High is implementing the use of Yondr pouches for all students attending summer school.

This initiative is in preparation for our bell-to-bell phone/device-free policy that will go into full effect when the new school year begins in September

Effective immediately for summer school:

  • All students are required to secure their cell phones and electronic devices — including earbuds, smartwatches and similar accessories — in a Yondr pouch upon arrival.
  • The pouch will be locked and remain in the student’s possession throughout the school day.
  • At dismissal, staff will unlock the Yondr pouch so students can retrieve their devices. Students are responsible for bringing their pouch to school each day.
  • Students who refuse to comply with this policy (by not placing their phone in a pouch) will not be permitted to attend summer school, placing their enrollment and academic progress at risk.
  • Any student found in possession of a device that is not secured in a Yondr pouch will have the device confiscated immediately. Confiscated devices will be returned at the end of the day.
  • At the end of summer school, Albany High students will keep their Yondr pouch for the start of the new school year in September. Non-district students will be required to return the pouch at the end of the program in order to receive their final grades.
